So Sony is set to release the Playstation 3 Slim model sometime soon; there is so much evidence to support it. Japan will stop selling 80GB PS3s after August 9 and Amazon is now offering $50 savings off a package with the 160GB model (http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-160-GB-Uncharted-Fortune-3/dp/B001ELI4S4/macnn). Sony has ordered a whole bunch of parts for new systems (http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20090727PD219.html) and the cost to manufacture the console is way down as, according to this article, http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20090727PD219.html, Sony Corporation's CEO and Executive Vice President admitted that the cost had dropped 70%. Finally, Sony has booked a 3 hour slot at the upcoming conference.
Sony hasn't confirmed that this release is upcoming because they don't want everyone (read: nobody except me) to stop buying PS3 right now and just wait the extra two weeks until the slim model comes out with a dramatically lower price and as a result of this lack of confirmation, I'm pretty upset.
If somebody comes on here and blasts me because of this, I would love to hear it because all I want is to understand why.
I have no inside information about the situation and I'm quite sure that I know less about the business of gaming than many other people but I just can't figure out what the hell Sony has been doing with this system. From what I have heard, it seems to me that developers have pretty much been begging Sony to lower the console price for about a year now. If Sony could just freaking market their product then it seems to me that they would be a lot more competitive in the console wars.
But no. What we have upcoming is a Metal Gear game on the X-Box 360 and an online Final Fantasy game that is (might not be?) no longer exclusive to Sony. They've chased developers away and now all I have to play is freaking Fat Princess (which is frustrating enough because of network problems).
All that to say, and sorry for getting massively off-topic, that the PS3 slim is coming out and everybody knows it. There have been scans of the new system posted on the Internet, there have been large leaks and extensive coverage of the new system in the media and, as a result, Sony has decided to do nothing. Why would they continue carrying on as if their product is a secret (which they did so recently with the PSP Go) when they could create some real hype for their product. Buy some TV time and advertise that the system that everybody wanted and nobody could afford is going to get cheaper. Start rumours about upcoming PS3 exclusives and, for the love of all things holy, patch things up with your developers.
I have a PS3 (obviously). I love my PS3 (not so obviously). All I need now is Sony to figure it out and to start fighting back in the marketing war.
